Fort Wayne is actively working to address homelessness through various initiatives aimed at providing shelter and supportive services to those in need.
City’s Approach to Homelessness
The city collaborates with social service agencies, healthcare professionals, and faith-based organizations to coordinate services and connect individuals and families experiencing homelessness to available shelters. In cases where encampments pose health or safety risks, the city issues a 72-hour notice before clearing the area, ensuring that affected individuals are informed about available housing and support services.
Challenges and Future Plans
Despite these efforts, Fort Wayne faces challenges due to a shortage of shelter beds, with existing facilities often operating at or above capacity. To address this, Mayor Sharon Tucker and the Office of Housing & Neighborhood Services are working to establish a low-barrier Homeless Services Center. This center aims to operate 24/7, providing increased access to shelter and housing resources for the community.
These ongoing efforts reflect Fort Wayne’s commitment to supporting its residents and working towards sustainable solutions to homelessness.
